The key feature of this type of vest is the Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment (MOLLE) webbing. This system consists of horizontal rows of PALS (Pouches Attachment Ladder System) webbing, which are essentially layers of stitched nylon straps with spaces in between. These spaces allow pouches and other compatible gear to be attached securely to the vest using straps or MOLLE clips.
- Plate pockets: These are internal compartments designed to hold ballistic plates, which are rigid inserts that provide protection against gunfire or shrapnel. Plate pockets are typically located on the front and back of the vest, and they may be sized to fit different plate sizes.
- Adjustable shoulder straps and waist straps: These allow the wearer to adjust the vest for a comfortable and secure fit.
- Padded mesh lining: This improves breathability and helps to keep the wearer cool and comfortable during extended wear.
- Hook and loop closures: These are used to secure the front flap of the vest, as well as for attaching pouches and other MOLLE-compatible gear.
- D-rings: These are metal loops that are sewn onto the vest and can be used to attach lanyards, carabiners, or other gear.
- Pockets: In addition to the plate pockets, some plate carrier vests may also have integrated pockets for magazines, ammunition, maps, compass, first-aid kit, and other essential items.
Military camo plate carrier vests with MOLLE webbing are used by military personnel, law enforcement officers, security guards, and for activities like paintball or airsoft. They can also be used by civilians for hunting, fishing, camping, or hiking, although ballistic plates are not typically used in these civilian applications.
